Wes meant something to her.

And for her to give that up—give him up—when they’d only just found each other again—well, that was just plain weird.

Not like my mom at all.

And now Lexi was headed into a situation my mom had just run from.

Nothing about this sat well with me.

“The timing’s horrible. Does she have to go?”

I parked my car and looked over at my friend. “I don’t know what the hell’s going on. This is not like my mom to pull something like this over nothing.”

Jillian nodded and said, “If you guys need anything, let me know.”

We both jumped out of the car and headed to the gates. Once we were inside the courtyard, I saw Lexi locking her door.

She had a backpack slung over her shoulder. When she spun around, our eyes met instantly. She gazed down and started hurrying around the pool.

Hands on my hips, I stood in front of the closed gate. “Can you ask Gigi to take care of the puppy for me, please?” I asked Jillian. She stood a few feet to my side and nodded. “Of course. Text me if you need anything else.” Then she slowly walked away, probably waiting to see what kind of reaction I’d get out of Lexi.

“Excuse me,” Lexi asked in a choked voice. Now that she was closer, I could tell she’d been crying.

“What’s going on?” I asked, not moving a muscle.

Her eyes rose to mine. “I have to go, or I’ll be late.”

Yeah.

Her eyes were definitely red and swollen. “I’ll move as soon as you tell me what’s happening.”

“Then I guess you’ll be standing there forever.”

I closed my mouth and swallowed.

New tactic.

Lexi was not in the mood to communicate.

“Here, give me your backpack. I’ll carry it to the car.” I reached my hand out, but she shook her head.

“No, I’ve got it.”

“Lex, let me carry it, please.”

She rolled her eyes impatiently. “Fine, but hurry.” Then she handed over her heavy backpack to me.

I slung it over my shoulder and began walking to my door.

“What the heck are you doing? My car’s that way!” she yelled behind me.

“I have to pack,” I shouted back to her.

“For what?” she shrieked, and it made me smile.

“I’m coming with you.”

“You’re what? No, you’re not!” she hollered.

This was going to be a very interesting flight to Edmonton.
