And that was not somewhere I was willing to go.

“Bye, Trey. Have a good night,” I said, even though I hoped he’d have a bad night.

A very, very bad, boring night.

Thinking of him having a good night gave me a stomachache.

The expression on his face changed again. This time he shot me a blank look. “Yeah, night.”

Then, he turned around and left.

I was sleeping so hardI didn’t notice the banging until the puppy started growling in a low, angry tone.

I startled awake and my pulse immediately quickened.

I listened carefully for any sound—ready to jump out of bed in a second.

Bang bang bang.

“What the heck?” I asked absolutely no one in the dark quiet of my bedroom.

I slipped out of bed, careful to take Hayley with me. She might hurt herself if she tried to jump off the bed.

More banging.

The tile was cool on my warm feet. I peered through the peephole.

“What the heck?” I blinked and looked out again.

It was Trey and two of his teammates. I could hear Trey laughing loudly through the door.

I opened it a crack. “What’s going on?”

The teammate on Trey’s right said, “Just bringing your man home.” Both the players on either side of him were rookies.

They were laughing like they thought Trey was hilarious.

Trey’s arms were around their shoulders—because the men were obviously supporting him.

Because he couldn’t stand up by himself.

Wonderful.

“His home is over there.” I pointed across the courtyard to Trey’s apartment. Of course, they’d know that, though.

“Uh, Lexi, he’s not exactly—okay. I don’t think he should be alone tonight. Someone should watch over him.”

I turned the light switch on and then it became clearer.

Trey was blitzed.

“Hey, thweethurt,” Trey slurred. He tried to focus on me, but from the look of things, he wasn’t having too much luck.

Despite the help of the two strong, young men—Trey was swaying dramatically.

Wonderful.

“Fine,” I said and almost immediately regretted my decision when the strong smell of alcohol hit my nose.
