I took them because I needed them.

There was a difference.

And, I didn’t lie.

I could quit them anytime I wanted to.

I just didn’t want to.

They were the only thing that helped me get through the day.

And the night.

I could handle them.

Beau drove up his driveway and parked. We both got out in silence.

I followed him up to his front door, and he let us in.

Instinctively, I looked around for the puppies—then I realized that they were back at the apartments.

Beau and Gigi only stayed at his house when it was his turn with the kids.

Otherwise, he and Gigi stayed at the apartments.

Gigi liked being around her girls.

She kept a close eye on them, and never quite took her finger off the pulse of the team.

She took her job as captain seriously.

Beau disappeared upstairs, so I continued into the kitchen.

I walked up to the patio doors and stared out into their huge backyard.

It changed a lot since Beau had found out about his twins.

His ex kept them a secret from him for years.

When Beau first moved in here, the yard was strictly adults only.

Now, the pool had a safety gate surrounding it.

A hockey net sat off to the side, with a few sticks of varying sizes resting against it.

Bikes, toys, and a jungle gym that I’d helped him put up.

Swings and all.

Yeah, Beau’s life had changed on a dime.

And he loved every single minute of it.

I couldn’t help but compare it to the joke my life had turned into.

Christ, I wish I had my pills with me.

“Heads up,” I heard Beau say behind me.
