“He told me he loves you, too,” I said back to her, and a goofy grin crossed her face.

The same goofy grin that had been on my dad’s face when he’d told me he loved Marianne.

“Cool.”

I nodded.

“I know this is all really sudden, and you must think I’m completely inept to do something like this at our age—”

It was my turn to grab her hand.

“No,” then I shook my head, “I mean, yeah it was pretty weird to see it all play out on TV. But, seeing you guys together at our apartment—I think I get it.”

“I wanted to explain everything to you then, but—well, it wasn’t the time for that.”

I tried not to laugh—but I had to. Except it came out as more of a snort.

Dad and Marianne had come over during the first reality show that I’d been in.

That we’d been in.

After Trey took off, I ran to the bedroom.

And locked the door.

And I might have screamed at my dad as he pounded on the door.

Anyway.

They left shortly after that.

Marianne started laughing along with me, too.

And it felt nice.

“I can be dramatic sometimes,” I admitted willingly.

“Trust me, kid. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”
