“Your dad said I needed to let you get over your ‘mad.’ I wasn’t sure that was a great idea, but I went with it anyway. Since he knows you better than I do.”

Marianne held up a pink shirt to me. “I think this would look adorable on you.”

Then she added it to the pile she’d collected on her arm.

“I think if I bring home one more shirt, Trey might scream. Most of his stuff’s in baskets on the floor right now as it is.”

She looked at me.

We stared at each other for a moment.

Then.

We doubled over laughing.

“Your dad’s clothes are in the guestroom. I promised him I’d pare down the closet. But we both know that was a lie.”

We laughed so loudly that everyone in the store turned to give us dirty looks.

Not that we cared.

Marianne was cool as shit.

Even though she’d secretly married my dad in Vegas.

Which I still didn’t understand.

But whatever.

We shopped for a while longer before Marianne said, “FYI, your house is beautiful.”

I stopped shuffling through the clothes rack. “Dad took you home?”

She nodded, and smiled. “We went up there first. Then I took him back to our place last week.”

I nodded.

I guess that was normal.

Marry someone.

Go see where they lived.

Normal for our family, that is.

“We have horses, too. Not as many as you, though.”

A sudden wash of panic flowed through me.

I gazed up. “Did you, uh, go in my room?”

My heart raced, and so did my mind.

Please, please, please say no.
