He stared at me, a serious look on his face. “I get you.”

“I didn’t tell Geneviève about the DNA tests.”

His eyebrows rose to an impressive height. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“I was thinking I’d wait until I had confirmation before I broke the news to her.”

Trey nodded slightly, not looking at all convinced.

“Needless to say, she didn’t take it all that well.”

“She talks about the boys all the time. I think she’s done well. All things considered,” Trey said, his head snapping in the puppies direction. They’d moved slightly but resettled beside each other.

“Yeah, I think she forgave me.”

“What happened with Sienna?”

I hesitated for a while, feeling like I was betraying Geneviève’s trust if I confided in Trey. “You can’t say anything.”

“I said I won’t.”

I let out a breath and said, “Sienna asked her to back off and give us a chance to become a family.”

Trey spat out his mouthful of beer. “What the hell?”

I nodded. “She asked Geneviève to get rid of me. And that’s exactly what she did.” That familiar, stabbing pain shot through my heart again at the thought of what Geneviève had done.

“That’s messed up.”

We finished our beers and sat in silence for a long while until he finally spoke, “The engagement and her moving in—it’s just for the show?”

“And possibly making us more appealing to sponsors.”

He shut his eyes and shook his head. Trey’s fingers ran through his hair after he dunked into the water. “Christ, that’s really messed up.”

“Which part? The fake relationship? Or her dumping me so my ex could move in?”

Trey’s eyes nearly rolled back in his head. “Jesus, Beau. She’s young. Give her a break, would you? The woman’s all of twenty-two years old. From the sounds of it, she hasn’t even had a serious relationship before.”

“Doesn’t matter. Can you imagine a woman you’re tight with giving you up? Because your ex wanted them to? Now that’s messed up.”

His face screwed up, and he sat up straight in the water. “Some sophisticated woman—who’s carried and currently raising your babies—comes over asking her to back off? Yeah, I can see someone as fucking nice as G letting her play her cards.”

I glared at him, not believing what I heard. “She gave me away because Sienna asked. That’s a goddamn weak move, man.”

“Yeah, or an incredibly brave one,” he muttered, staring at me, stonefaced.

“Ha, yeah. She wanted me so bad that she handed me off to my ex. Even if Geneviève had felt bad about it, she was cured by Friday night. You should have seen her—short dress, hair all done up, sexy makeup—and then she came home smelling like some asshole’s cologne.”

Trey started laughing, his head tipping back into the water. “I saw her that night. She looked incredible. And it was me she smelled like.”

I scowled at him, ready to pounce. “What are you talking about?”

“It was Gianna’s birthday. The girls went out and some of the guys met up with them later. G was stuck to my side most of the time.”

I nodded, feeling like an idiot. “I didn’t know that. Wish I had, though. Would’ve been able to get some sleep that night.”

“You’ve got it bad, man.” Trey chuckled as he slid up onto the edge of the hot tub. “My advice? Don’t wait too long to lick your wounds. G’s one in a million. You’d be stupid to let her go.”
