“Have—you?” I asked, feeling my heart beat in my throat.

His head sprang up, and nearly snarled at me, “Have I what?”

“Have you—slept with anyone? Since we broke up?”

“We didn’t break up. You kicked me out.”

My stomach felt like a lead weight had taken up residence inside of it. “You didn’t answer my question,” I said, feeling even less like hearing what he was going to tell me.

“Of course not,” he said, deep frown lines showing on his forehead.

Relief like I’d never felt before flowed through my body. I even regained feeling in my arms and legs.

I was grateful when Carson zoomed over to his father and asked, “Why don’ts the puppies have names?”

Beau smiled at him and kissed his cheek as he picked him up. I swear to goodness, my heart nearly exploded. “Uh, you know what? I’m not sure. You should ask Gigi.”

Big Beau and little Beau looked at me with the same eyes. “Your father and I haven’t been able to agree on anything.”

I suppose I could have named them when we broke up, but I’d hardly had the energy to do what needed to get done, let alone nail down all important puppy names that they’d have for the rest of their lives.

“Oh,” Carson said, looked confusedly at his dad. “When do you think you’ll agree on something?”

“Heaven only knows, Son. Heaven only knows.”
