“Trust me, he’s still hurting.”

“He told me he passed the concussion protocol tests?” I said, feeling a bit confused about Trey’s diagnosis.

Beau nodded, but he sighed a long, deep huffing sound. “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean he bounced right back.”

Darnit.

I’d hoped Trey was telling the truth when he’d said it was only a minor bump.

“Gigi, why’s there dirt in this bread?” Carson asked, his sweet little voice not containing even a hint of malice. In fact, he made me laugh.

“It’s good for you,” Beau said, picking up his bread and taking a giant bite.

Cooper looked at his father in amazement. “Dirt is good for you?”

I started laughing so hard, I had to wipe my eyes.

“It’s not dirt, boy. It’s vitamins and—good stuff. To make you grow strong,” Beau said, chewing down his bread.

“Like you?” Cooper asked in a hopeful tone.

“Yes.”

“Cool,” Cooper said, tearing into his piece, then Carson followed suit. “We wanna be just like Papa when we grow up.”
