Breathing him in.

Deep.

“Geneviève, I—” he began to say against my mouth.

“Mr. Moreau…” a voice boomed behind us. I jumped off the bed, straightening my skirt in a hurry. My heart thumped like crazy in my chest as I nearly collapsed into the chair.

“Hey, Doc. Uh, how’s it going?” Beau asked with a smile on his face and in voice. He peered down at me with a cocky look in his eyes.

Man, how I’d missed that.

“I was going to ask you the very same thing. Unnecessarily, I see,” the doctor chuckled and wrote something down on his chart. Then he asked Beau a series of questions.

Some he could answer.

Some I helped with.

When the doctor was going over his list of medications, the door to Beau’s room slid open again. This time, it wasn’t a doctor or a nurse.

“Oh my God, Beau!” Sienna cried, all dolled up in full makeup. She wore high heels and a tight, pink dress.

The boys slinked around her, then caught sight of their father. “Daddy!” they screamed, and ran directly over to Beau’s bed. Beau smiled and lifted Carson up onto the bed. I helped Cooper.

They hugged their dad, happy to see him, even at this late hour. “Did they gived you a sticker?” Cooper asked, looking up at Beau.

“No, Coop.”

“Oh, were you a bad boy? I always gets a sticker at the doctors,” he told his dad in a stern voice.

“Sometimes we get stamps. I bet he’s got that instead,” Carson said, checking out the backs of Beau’s hands.

Beau looked at me and smiled.

I grinned back.

“We had to hear about you on the news of all places, Beau. Why didn’t you text me? You knew I’d worry,” Sienna said, slinking up to Beau’s side. She rubbed his arm and looked down at him with a loving smile.

“Such a beautiful family,” a nurse said as she entered the room. “Your wife was so worried about you. Calling all the time for updates.”

That familiar pain returned once again. My stomach twisted in time to the beat of my aching heart.

She was right. They did look good together.

Since there was nothing more for me to do—and the room was overcrowded—I stood up and moved out.

Nobody even noticed.

Until I was two steps into the hallway, I heard Beau call my name.

I kept walking.
