“Again, that’s not how it works.”

“That is how it worked.”

He leaned in and spoke into my ear, “The world is going to go completely, fucking crazy.”

“How are we going to do this? I won’t be done with my residency for—well, forever. Where am I going to find the time to change diapers and breastfeed?”

“Your husband is retired. He’s got all the time in the world.”

“You work everyday at the foundation.”

“They can get by without me while I change diapers and breastfeed.”

“We really need to chat about biology.”

“I agree.” He leaned down and kissed my lips.

“That’s not what I meant. In fact, this is exactly how this,” I said, pointing to the test, “happened.”

“Admit it,” he said, gazing down at me with the sweetest, most contented look on his face. “It was the perfect morning to make a baby.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Are you happy?” he asked, his eyes tracing over my face.

“Deliriously so,” I answered back without needing to think about it for even a second. Just the notion of adding to our family brought tears to my eyes and more joy to my heart than I ever knew possible.

The biggest smile I’d ever seen formed on Beau’s lips. “Good. Me too.” We stared into each other’s eyes for a minute before he spoke again, “You know my genes are totally going to dominate, right?”

I let out a small, unexpected laugh. “We’ll see about that, Moreau. May the best genes win.”
