She shifted in her seat, then stared out the front window. “You can go out and have a good time. Don’t feel like you need to babysit me.”

I put the SUV back into park. “I am having a good time. Aren’t you?”

All I got from her was a small nod.

“Geneviève,” I called, my voice raspy. Her head slowly turned to me. “Aren’t you having a good time? With me?” I asked, and that question was so loaded with feeling, it made my guts twist—that was how much her answer meant to me.

“You know I am, you big dork. All I meant was—I’m sure there are certain—people—you want to spend time with while you’re here. I don’t want to hold you back from them. That’s all I meant.”

“I want to spend time with you. Is that all right?”

“I don’t believe you.”

“That’s fine by me,” I said, putting the SUV back in drive. She was quiet for a while, switching the radio station a few times as I drove.

Finally, she broke the silence. “Where are we going now?”

“To one of my favorite places in the world,” I said, sliding my hand over hers, more than excited to share my next stop with Gigi.
