Ren drained his beer. “Steady, I’m ready for another. You buyin’?”

“Yep.” Steady hopped to his feet. “Next round is on me.”

Finn stood. “I’ll get this round. You got the last.” Finn turned and nearly crashed into a staggering man.

“‘Scuse me,” the man slurred. Finn saw the moment when the man registered his scars. “Whoa.”

Finn started to move around the guy, but his beer gut took up most of the narrow passage. The man grabbed Finn’s arm, halting his progress. “Your face is all kindsa fucked up.”

“Wade,” his buddy behind him cautioned.

In his periphery, Finn saw Cam and Chat stand. His lips tipped. Even when he fucked up, even when he flew off the handle, even when he did the stupidest shit imaginable, his friends had his back. He pried the guy’s hand off his arm.

“Ya know what, Wade? Good thing the half a face I have left is twice as pretty as the one I’m lookin’ at.” Finn slid a chair in and moved past.

“What’d that guy say? That was some math shit.” Wade turned to his friends.

“Let’s go.” One of the men behind drunken Wade cast an apologetic glance to the table, took his buddy by the shoulders, and ushered him to the exit.

At the bar, Finn turned back to the table and was met with five shocked expressions. He grinned, pulled some bills from his wallet, and turned to flag down the bartender.

May was going to love this story.
