Twitch blurted the truth. “Calliope, I’m pregnant.”

Calliope stopped mid-sip and looked at her friend with misted eyes. “Are you happy?”

“Not at first. I was freaked out. It’s Finn’s,” Twitch said.

“I figured.”

“Yeah, so that complicates things. I mean knowing I’m going to be doing this alone.” Twitch set the cracker back on the plate.

“You’re not alone, sweetie.” Calliope squeezed her friend’s hand.

“You know what I mean, though. My dad is the best, so I always imagined my baby having this great dad.”

“Well, he or she will have plenty of surrogate dads around to, you know, chase off boys or teach him how to blow stuff up,” Calliope said.

Twitch laughed through her tears. “I just… I didn’t want to tell you because I know you’re trying.”

Calliope hugged her. “Hey, this is not about me. You’re going to be a mom, Twitch. I’m so happy for you. Who knows, maybe the little Twitchlet will have a playmate one of these days.”

Twitch wiped her nose on a paper towel. “I hope so. I’d like to have someone else to fumble through motherhood with.”

“Come on, get the popcorn in the microwave. What sappy chick flick did you pick this time?”

“Well, I figured you wouldn’t want to watch something about pregnancy, and I don’t want to watch anything romantic, so I queued up Skyfall. We can lust over Daniel Craig and watch him shoot bad guys.”

“Sounds perfect.”
