She laughed as she said it. I nodded my head like I knew what she was talking about, but I didn’t. “Are you, Hope, and her dad staying here in town? You said you were thinking of settling here. I hope you do. Don’t let those bitches from earlier turn you off. Most people in Hunters Creek are great.”

“It’s just me and Hope. We’ve been staying in town and I’m still deciding whether we’ll stay or not. I need to find a job if we do.”

She frowned. “Let me think and see if I know of anyone who’s hiring. What kind of work do you do? The club knows a lot of people.”

I didn’t know what she meant by the club, but I told her my skills. “I’ve done HR mainly, though I can do receptionist and even some bookkeeping. I learn quickly and computers are easy for me to catch onto with new programs,” I told her, trying not to get my hopes up.

“Surely, we can find you something. Here, give me your number and I’ll call you if I find something,” she said as she held out her hand.

I didn’t want to tell her I didn’t have a cell phone so instead, I said, “I don’t have my phone with me. Why don’t you tell me yours and I’ll call and check in with you?” She gave me a funny look but rattled off her number. I committed it to memory. We chatted a minute or two longer then she left. I quickly grabbed the few things I needed and got out of there.

Hope seemed happy with her meal. As she settled in for the night, I tried to forget my own growling stomach and focus on praying for someone to hire me. I needed to find a job quickly. As it got later and later, my eyes finally closed. I needed to get a few hours of sleep before Hope woke up. Hopefully, tomorrow would be a better day.
