“I’m fine. Get your mitts off me. Where’s Jessica?” All of us shook our heads. Ajax got closer to Zara. I could see the fear on his face. His eyes looked wild. His woman was now officially missing. Again.
“Was she with you, Doc?” he asked.
“Yeah, I went with her when you went to church. She was showing me the guesthouse while we waited for you. We were in the backyard on the patio and had just decided to go inside to get a drink. Next thing I knew, I woke up with this big oaf carrying me and running his hands all over me.”
“I was checking for injuries, you brat. Your head needs to be cleaned and maybe stitched,” I growled at her, as I pressed a clean cloth to her head. She frowned.
“If it does, I’ll stitch it myself. No way I’d let you near me with a needle. Now, back to Jessica. Where is she?”
“We don’t know. We need to look for her. How long ago would you say you two were at the house?”
She looked at the clock on the wall. “It was maybe twenty minutes ago. I remember looking at my phone not long before I was knocked out. I was about to tell her I needed to make a call when everything went blank.”
Ajax jumped up and went toward Outlaw’s room with Bull and Rebel hot on his heels. I stayed with Zara. She kept trying to sit up. “Sit still. Take a look at this and tell me if you need stitches. I don’t think so, but you’re the doctor.” I distracted her with a mirror one of the women handed to me. She looked at her head.
“It’s fine. A couple of Steri-Strips and it’s good to go. You have some in there?” She gestured to the first aid box someone else had handed to me. I rustled through it and came up with some. She let me clean her cut with some saline and disinfectant, then she put on her own strips.
In no time, Ajax, Bull and Rebel were back. They told us they knew where Jess was. As they went to get on their bikes, I stood up. “I need to go with them. You stay here and be good. I’ll be back.”
She scowled at me. “I’ll decide if I stay or not. Lucky for you, I want to. Go get Jessica back. And Demon, be careful.” I saw a flicker of worry flash over her face. I gave her a tender kiss.
“I will, Hellion.” I headed outside to join them. I wondered how long before we got to Jessica, and what the wait would do to my brother. You could see he was ready to come unglued. As we raced away from the compound, I prayed everyone would be okay.
