“You didn’t need to do that. I’m used to it,” he said.

“Maybe you are, but that doesn’t mean you should be the one who does it,” I told him. He gave me another shrug. Sometimes I worried that he was too controlled and emotionless. With her dead, we had to find Daisy. Bull gestured to Alex.

“Get Tate and take her down to the crematorium. You know what to do. Then go spread her ashes somewhere far from here. We have a bunny to find,” he growled. I could see he was pissed. So were the rest of us. It reminded me of some of the shit a few of the bunnies had pulled out in Terror’s chapter.

We’d just cleared the Cellar when Bull’s phone rang. He answered it and then swore. We all waited to find out what was wrong now. He barked into the phone, “We’ll be right there.” Then he hung up. He looked at us.

“That was Jake. We need to get to the clubhouse. Now.” We tried to ask what was wrong, but he wouldn’t say. He just raced over to his bike. We did the same. A couple of minutes later and we were pulling into our spots outside of the clubhouse. We all hurried inside. When we got into the common room, we all froze. Standing around were Tate and Jake along with the old ladies and Zara. I had no idea when she’d come back. Jessica was standing with them. They weren’t what had caught our attention. It was the body lying, unmoving in the middle of the floor. It was Daisy. She was lying there with a hole between her eyes and a gun on the floor beside her.

“What the fuck happened?” I shouted. I went over to pull Jessica into my arms. She seemed to be spaced and shaking. Not that I could blame her. This would be the third dead body she’d seen in the last four hours. I waited for one of the others to answer. The answer came from the most unlikely person.

“I shot her.”

“What?” I asked incredulously along with a few of the others. I couldn’t believe I’d heard right.

“I shot her,” Zara said louder. She looked a little pale, but she seemed to be rock steady.

Demon put his arm around her. “You shot her? Why? What happened, babe?” he asked her.

She swallowed before she answered. “I came back to check on Jessica again, just to be sure she was feeling okay. When I walked in the door, that bunny was pulling Jessica through the bar area. She had a gun in her hand, and she shouted at the other ladies to sit still. She didn’t want to hurt them. She just wanted Jess. She kept muttering something about getting rid of her and Ajax would come back to her. She was crazy as hell. I knew what she was going to do. She was going to kill Jess. I have no idea how she could think you’d be okay with it, but like I said, she was nuts.” I closed my eyes as the thought of how close I’d been to losing her again shot through me.

Zara continued, “I didn’t have time to get help. If she got out of here with her, she was done for. Jocelyn shouted at her, telling her she wouldn’t get away with it. When she looked at her, I took the gun out of my purse, and I shot her.”

“You carry a gun?” Demon asked her, sounding stunned. She frowned at him.

“Of course, I do. I told you I did the other day. I’m a single woman who lives alone and works at night. I have a permit. Everything should be fine when you call the cops. Castle doctrine and being in imminent danger is the basis for my actions.” He shook his head.

“We’ll talk about your carrying later. Babe, we can’t call the cops. If we do, they’ll start to look into where the others are. We can’t explain that.” I knew she was aware of what had happened to some of them. She looked at him for a minute before she nodded.

“Fine. I won’t say anything. You do whatever you need to do. I need to check on Jessica again. This second scare so soon after the first one isn’t good for her.” I watched in astonishment as she came and took Jessica’s hand and led her down to my room. The other ladies went with them. I looked at my brothers.

“Did that just happen?” They nodded. “Damn, okay, I guess we’d better watch out for doc. She’s a beast. Let’s get Daisy’s body out of here before they come back. She can be cremated with May. Once that’s taken care of, we need to all sit down and have a fucking drink. I need one.” They all yelled their agreement. It must have been by silent agreement that the women stayed down in my room with the babies until after Daisy’s body had been removed and the floor cleaned.

When they joined us, those who could had a drink. Jess still looked pale but insisted on being out with the rest of us. Later, when things settled down, I took her to bed. We held each other. I thanked God that he had protected her. Now, we should be in the clear to be married. No more crazy stepmothers, stepsisters or bunnies who wanted someone who was never going to be theirs. The fact she thought I would even if Jessica hadn’t come along blew me away.
