“No. Only that she was alive. Bull said he saw her briefly at the accident site and she wasn’t coherent. Please, doc, go find something out before I lose my mind. I want to be back there with her.”

“I know, but until they get her stable, they won’t let you back there. However, I’ll stay with her. I have friends here. They’ll let me go back there with her. I promise as soon as I can, I’ll get you back with her. Try to be patient. You don’t want them to kick your ass out,” she told me with a wink. I had to laugh. She was really funny for a doctor.

As she headed to the desk, Demon followed on her heels. Christ, he had it bad. He could barely let her out of his sight. She seemed to be giving him a run for his money. Any other time, I’d be teasing him about it.

For the next hour, we paced and sat in the waiting area. I briefly thought of the cops racing around back at headquarters. I knew they’d be running all of us through their various systems. Lucky for us, none of us had ever been arrested. They’d find we were clean.

I stood up. I was going to go find out what the hell was up. As I took a step toward the door, the main glass door opened and in walked an older man in an expensive suit. He looked around before going to the desk to talk to the lady I’d spoken to. She said something to him, then to my surprise, she gestured toward me. He looked at me in surprise and walked my way. He seemed to hesitate when he reached me.

“Hello, I’m Mr. Hudson. I understand you’re here for Jessica Abrams. May I ask why? Who are you?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Hudson, but who in the hell are you? I’m Jessica’s fiancé. I’ve never heard her mention you.”

“I’m sorry. I’m her attorney. I was supposed to meet her over an hour ago here in town. I came in from Nashville. She never showed up then when I rang her, someone answered and said she was here. Can you tell me what’s wrong?”

“She was in a car accident on the way to your meeting. I have no idea how badly she’s hurt, or how the baby is.”

He jerked in surprise. “Baby? She’s pregnant?” I nodded. “Oh my, I had no idea.”

“Why were you meeting her?”

“I’m sorry, but as her attorney that’s privileged information. I don’t know what she might want you to know and not know. She never said anything about having a fiancé or being pregnant. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to see if I can speak to her.” He walked off to the desk again. I was starting to get very pissed and impatient. No way was he getting to see her before I did. No fucking way!

“Don’t lose it,” Bull warned me. I shot him a look. Thankfully, that was the moment Dr. Newton came out. She came straight over to me.

“Ajax, she’s doing okay. They’re finishing up a few more tests.”

“Is the baby okay?”

“For right now, it looks like it. They’ll most likely keep her overnight at least to observe them. She’s awake and less groggy. I told her you were all here.” She hesitated. “She said she didn’t want to see anyone. I’m sorry, Ajax. She didn’t say why, and I didn’t ask because I could see she was getting upset. I swear I’ll stay with her.” I pushed past her. No way was she keeping me out. Jessica was going to see me whether she liked it or not. I knew she had to still be peeved about earlier. This wasn’t the place or time for it, but if she pushed me, we’d have it out.

I shoved the door open to the back of the ER. Doc was right behind me, trying to get me to stop.

“Damn it, Ajax. Listen, you stubborn asshole. She’s not ready to see you. I don’t want her upset,” she hissed at me. I swung around.

“I’m grateful you came and you’re watching out for her, doc, but that’s my woman and baby. I’m not going to be kept from either of them, not even by Jess. She’s mad at me right now. I need to explain some things. I promise I’ll try and upset her the least amount possible. I need to know if she's okay and what happened.”

She sighed. “Fine. Come with me. But keep your voice down or I’ll have to throw you out myself.” I laughed. The thought of tiny Doc Newton throwing me out was hilarious. I followed her back through the maze of curtained-off spaces.
