Dodo held up his hand and looked at Ronan. “Before you speak, remember, I will allow you out of your contract to return to Washington.”
The room got quiet.
“Still?” Judge Johnston looked at Dodo impatiently. “How will that help the team?”
Dodo crossed his arms over his chest. “That’s how it is. We have twenty-two other players. Time to tap that resource and let someone else shine.”
The judge frowned. “This has gotten off course.”
“You know Calista can’t handle running this team.” Dodo’s absolute certainty was deflating.
Calista pressed into the back of her chair.
“She got Zee Czerski.” Judge Johnston didn’t even lower his voice. “And she’s keeping Stromkin. Do you know how that’s going to play out? Do I have to say Cup?”
Dodo stiffened, but he didn’t answer the questions.
The judge got it. Judge Johnston knew Ronan was destined to be a superstar player, and even though he and Dodo were friends, he was showing he could put the team first. Calista straightened, eager to hear more.
“Captain, I’ve followed your career,” Judge Johnston paused briefly. “Your efforts transforming this team have been pivotal. Whether you stay or go, your opinion will factor heavily in my final decision.”
Ronan turned and looked Calista straight in the eye. He wore a business professional expression. He was a man who wanted a straight response.
Calista swallowed. She should not find his tough look a turn on, this was not the time.
“Are you allowing me out of my contract so I can return to Washington?” Ronan asked in a tense voice. “I want to hear it from you.”
Her heart cracked. He had to know the answer.
