Léon loves animals, but he can’t take care of them. He’s always working and doesn’t have time to take care of anything but himself.
“What are you going to do with them?” I smirk, seeing him thinking while the two of us walk toward Félix’s office.
“I don’t know, but I can’t keep them. Maybe take them to an animal shelter or something.” He shrugs and looks down at the box. “They are cute, though.”
Glancing in the box, an idea comes to me. “I’ll take them. Désirée loves animals, and I bet she’d agree in a heartbeat.
“Thanks, Malcolm,” Léon says, his lip curling upward.
“Don’t mention it. I’ll take them home after meeting with Félix.” Knocking on my boss’s door, I wait for him to call out. I’m not trying to walk in on him doing Madelaine. I’ve caught them one too many times.
“What?” Félix calls out.
Fuck, he doesn’t sound happy. I’m either interrupting him and his wife, or something’s pissed him off.
Opening the door, I step through, closing it behind me. Léon stays in the hallway to wait. I take one look at his face and know it’s the latter, plus Madelaine isn’t in the room. Furrowing my brow, I meet his gaze head-on. “What’s going on?”
“Fucking prick, Gaylord, came around here again—right before you got here—wanting to talk about him being with Désirée,” he fumes, nostrils flaring. “Had the nerve to tell me he wasn’t leaving the area. That he wants to be with Désirée and wants a chance to prove that Désirée’s in good hands with him.”
“Not going to happen,” I grind out. “If he comes near Désirée, I’ll break his neck myself.” I’m not playing when it comes to anyone trying to take her away from me. No matter how they try. “I hope you told him to get the fuck out and don’t come back.”
Félix curls his lip in disgust. “Not stupid. He’s not getting anywhere near Désirée. Even if she wasn’t yours.”
“You said he just left here?” I ask, thinking back to the car I saw outside and the guy walking down the street. Fuck, it was probably him I saw walking down the street.
“I’m asking one of the men to follow him,” Félix declares, reading my mind. “I don’t trust the bastard.”
I calm marginally, knowing he’s asking one of the guys to follow Gaylord and switch the subject to what we need to discuss. Nothing has been found on Dimitri’s whereabouts. We’re going to have to put out new feelers weed him out if need be. I’m done with the ass hole playing games.
After finishing the meeting with Félix, I head back out. I don’t have to tell him where I’m going. He knows. In the hallway, I take the box from Léon and head for the door. I figure I’ll stop at a pet store on the way home, get what the rabbits need before going home to surprise Désirée. I’m sure she’ll be elated by having baby animals. It’ll also give her something else to focus on.
