“Oh honey, don’t you worry. All that matters is you’re okay,” Darby says as she smiles at me. My heart hammers against my ribs as I glance around the room at all of them.

“Will you just take me home?” I ask, looking up at Devon.

“Of course. Let’s go,” he ushers me out of the office and back toward the door.

“I want a text as soon as she’s home,” I hear Justice say. Why does he care? We parted ways.

Ignoring the urge to ask, I keep walking until we make it outside. Devon stops us and turns around to face me.

“What happened in there?”

“My ex Trevor. He wasn’t a very good man,” I tell him truthfully.

“He was abusive?”

“Yes, he was.”

“And Justice knew about this? How would he know?” he asks, sounding concerned.

“We were stuck together a long time. We talked a lot,” I admit to him.

“You have feelings for him.”

“What? No.”

“Yeah, you do. I can see it all over your face, Skylar.”

“It’s not like that. Not anymore,” I tell him.

“Not anymore? So at one point, it was?”

“It was just … I don’t know what it was, okay? It just happened,” I shout at him. I run my hand through my hair and sigh.

“I don’t want to be in the middle of anything,” Devon says.

“You’re not. I promise you.”

“Let’s just get you home,” he says before leading me toward the car.

My heart feels heavy in my chest as he opens the door and ushers me inside. As Devon walks around and climbs into the driver’s seat, I settle into my seat.

The rest of the ride back to my house is silent.
