Chapter Eleven

Justice

It felt good telling her. It felt good getting it out and into the open to her. Even though I fight this attraction to her, she’s slowly seeping into every pore of my being. I can’t let her go. I don’t want to.

“I don’t know how to feel anymore, Sky. You make my heart pound in my chest and make me feel things I never wanted to feel again. I don’t know how to deal with all this,” I confess. She makes me want to be better and start over.

“I don’t know how to trust anyone with my heart anymore. It’s been broken so many times I don’t know if it can be repaired.”

“I know it has. Much like mine.” Words just don’t seem like enough. Showing her what I feel doesn’t seem like enough either. I don’t know what to do here. I don’t know what I should be feeling. I’m about to kiss her again when someone knocks on the door. Reluctantly I pull away from her and walk out of the bathroom and toward the door as she follows behind me.

Pulling the door open, I see Grohl as he looks between us.

“You’re moving to somewhere more permanent.”

“What?” Sky snaps loudly.

“You lost him?” I ask. He nods his head. I figured as much.

“We had men on him, but he somehow slipped by us. My supervisor thinks it’s for the best we move you immediately.”

“Fine. Give us a few minutes,” I tell him, noting our attire. He nods his head and steps back out of the room before I close the door. I turn to face Sky and see the anger in her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Skylar.”

“It’s not your fault. Let’s just get ready,” she says as she turns and walks back into the bedroom. Sky grabs her clothes and quickly pulls them on. I’m thankful they brought us changes of clothes.

I dress quickly and pack up our bags before walking to the door. Before I open it, I turn to Sky.

“I don’t just tell anyone what happened, Skylar.”

“I know, and I appreciate you trusting me enough to do that. It means a lot to me,” she says softly. I nod my head and lean in, pressing my lips to hers.

We follow the man at the door out to the waiting SUV and climb in before it takes off. No one speaks as we arrive at the airport. I can feel Sky is on edge. I can see it in the way she shifts from foot to foot, and I’d love nothing more than to ease some of that tension, but this isn’t the time or the place.

We walk into the airport and are taken to a secure location while waiting to board our plane. Sky fidgets with the hem of her shirt as I watch her. She’s so damn beautiful, so perfect. She’s everything a sane man could ask for, and I want it. I want it all, but it feels wrong. Why does it feel so damn wrong when I know it’s right? This feeling I have in my chest is all for her. It’s not about the past. It’s about right now. She looks over at me, and our eyes lock. There’s more there. I can feel it. I know it.

A soft smile tugs across her lips when Grohl announces it’s time to board the plane. We’re ushered onto the small plane and take our seats.

“Is now a bad time to tell you I’m afraid of heights?” she asks, sounding as sweet as ever.

“Are you?”

“I am. And I’ve never been on a plane before,” she informs me. I chuckle as I sit next to her and buckle her in.

“You’re going to be fine. Just breathe,” I reassure her.

“It’s not that easy. I’m nervous.”

“I know you are, and I’m sorry. This is what’s best for now. I hate we have to do this, Skylar. I really do,” I tell her. I know she wants to call Christy and let her know she’s okay, but she can’t do that, and I know it bothers her. I feel like this is all my fault.

“Just … hold my hand,” she says through a laugh. I grab her hand, bringing it to my lips and kissing it before settling it in my lap.

Grohl and a few others take their seats, and before long, we take off.

“What’s your favorite color?” I ask Sky, trying to keep her mind off how high we are off the ground.

“Green.”
