“Do you know why one of them would head in my direction?”

“I was hoping you might be able to tell me.”

The scar on Reese’s shoulder burned, and the memory of teeth grinding against bone made him grit his teeth.

Harrington said his name.

“Still here, still….” The on-ramp came up on Reese’s left. He took it.

“Do you know of a reason?”

“A reason for what?”

“Why that Anubis would head your direction?”

The pain in Reese’s shoulder grew louder. “No… no…” Sweat beaded on his brow. A trickle ran into his eye. He wiped it away, almost knocking off his glasses.

“Were you hurt?”

Hurt? Reese should have been dead. People didn’t outmaneuver an Anubis.

“No, I’m okay.”

“Are you sure?” There was only concern in Harrington’s voice.

Reese grit his teeth. “Yeah… yeah. I’m sure.”

“How long will it take you to reach Macedonia?”

“Not much traffic. Thirty-five, forty minutes if I stay under the speed limit.”

“How fast can you go and still drive safely?”

“I don’t think the state patrol cares how fast I can go and stay safe. If I get pulled over, it will take me a lot longer to get there than forty-five minutes.”

“You let me take care of the state patrol. Just get to Macedonia, Dr. Dante. My people will be waiting for you.”

He hung up.
