ChapterThirteen
“Ipromise I’ll take care of him.” Isaiah pushed his fist against Nox’s ribs and then backed away. A hypodermic needle stuck in his side.
Luca screamed.
And pure rage swallowed Nox whole.
The drone of an engine created white noise.
“What’s… happening?” Nox’s inhale wheezed.
“I don’t know. It’s just standing there.” Luca tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.
“Maybe it doesn’t know—” Nox coughed an exhale.
Soft voices traveled from beyond a door.
Metal creaked. Glass fractured. A massive black wolf stepped from the hood of the compact car onto the ground. Nox had called them Anubis, but now knew they were Sarvari.
Either way, they were a danger to Luca.
Nox shoved open the passenger door and collapsed. His wasted muscles too weak to hold him up.
But the absolute must to protect Luca gave him the strength to drag himself forward.
A breath warmed the soft spot under Nox’s ear.
Luca. A woman. Dr. Dante…
Two Sarvari watching from the shadows.
Agony punched through Nox’s chest, releasing the ichor. But instead of being forgotten in a void of nothing, fire rushed through his veins, ice blistered his skin, and the dying storm inside him exploded.
“I love you. You hear me?”
The small room had one door and no windows. And a weak light on the wall muddied the shadows.
Luca lay tucked against Nox’s chest. With nothing between them, there was only the feel of tawny muscle, strong bone, and the heat of his skin.
But the scent of another man tainted Luca’s blood.
One Nox knew. One the Anubis loathed.
The part of Nox’s mind who was still the man knew it meant nothing, but to the Anubis, it was a blatant threat to its place beside its Alpha.
Nox growled, and Luca opened his eyes.
“Hey…” Luca started to sit up.
Nox forced him back down.
“What’s—”
“You smell likehim.”
There was a moment of confusion in Luca’s expression. “Isaiah.”
Nox dragged his touch from the dip in Luca’s collar bone to the slope of his shoulder.
