ChapterTwo

Luca pushed back the remaining eggs, biscuits, and bacon. “You’re going to have to eat the rest of my breakfast. I’m too full.”

“You barely ate half.” Nox finished the last bite of sausage.

“I’m full.”

“You didn’t eat a lot of dinner last night either.”

The empty pizza box sat on the dresser next to the TV. “I ate two slices.”

“Exactly.” Nox pointed at him with his fork.

“I was tired.”

And the reason was written in the tangled sheets falling off the bed and the scent of sex on Luca’s skin. At least the Anubis had let Luca sleep until morning.

“Not everyone has a bottomless pit for a stomach.” He threw his napkin at Nox, and it bounced off his forehead.

“I’m not a bottomless pit.” At least for food.

Nox tugged Luca’s Styrofoam container to his side of the table and cleaned up the leftovers.

Luca smirked.

“What?”

“Did you even chew?”

Nox scraped up the gravy caught in the grooves of the container.

“You’re going to lick the shine off that thing.”

“It’s too good to waste.” The café up the road had to be one of the best places they’d ever gotten food from.

Luca laughed and a beat of happiness hummed through the Anubis. Whatever caused the pauses in the feeling, Luca hid. The ability to experience emotions ran both ways, but Luca seemed much better at it.

Nox gathered up their empty containers and tossed them in the garbage.

“I’m going to brush my teeth and shave.” Luca took the case of toiletries from the red duffle bag. Nox’s bag was blue. They shared the green one.

Three bags most people used to carry a change of clothes to the gym contained everything they owned.

Ironic how Nox had the strength to protect Luca from creatures powerful enough to take down an army of men but failed at giving him something as simple as a bed to call his own.

Luca drew a warm line with his touch to Nox’s hand and wove their fingers together.

“I’m happy,” Luca said.

“I know.”

“Then you know I don’t regret any of this.”

Nox cradled Luca’s hand and kissed the back of his knuckles. “I know that too.”

“Then what’s wrong?” Luca cupped Nox’s cheek.

The better question would have beenwhat was right?
