Logan sighs and shakes his head. Out of all of us, he’s the one who has to put up with Jax’s shit the most, but they’re both as bad as each other.
Jax catches up just as we meet Hudson and Riley down on the field with the rest of the team, and I roll out my shoulders, preparing for what I assume is going to be a killer session. Noise stirs up from across the school and I glance back at the student parking lot, finding Brielle Ashford huddled around her new group of friends. Ilaria, Chanel, and Arizona. And honestly, I don’t know how I feel about it. There’s nothing wrong with them, in fact, they’re probably good friends to have when stepping into a new school. They’ll show her the ropes, teach her how things are done around here, and keep her on track, but they’re not fucking pushovers, and that’s what bugs me. They’ll keep her away from me, warn her off. They’re not going to make it easy for me to destroy her, but that’s alright, I like a challenge, and Brielle Ashford is one hell of a challenge to have.
“What’s the deal with this chick?” Hudson asks, stretching out his calves and catching me staring at the feisty blonde I’ve studied all day. “It’s been one day and she’s already getting to you.”
“She’s just some random girl,” I grunt, turning away and focusing on the boys, hating the way Riley watches me in return, his eyes narrowed as if he knows my darkest secrets … Well, he does know them, every last one of them, and they have never made him watch me the way he’s looking at me now. “I’m just toying with her, letting her know how things go around here. She’ll break and then I’ll fuck her out of my system.”
Logan scoffs. “Right, you know she’s been hanging out with Chanel all day. That bitch ain’t going to let you get close enough to fuck the new chick over.”
I arch a brow, surprised by his bluntness toward Chanel. “That bitch?”
Logan glances away. “Lay off, man. She means nothing to me.”
Jax scoffs and shoves his twin brother against his shoulder. “Right. So, you haven’t had a hard-on for her since Tanner was through with her last year?”
Logan grunts something none of us can make out and stalks away as Jax grins proudly after him. There’s nothing the twins like more than getting under each other’s skin, and lately, throwing Logan’s fucked-up crush on Chanel in his face is all it takes for Logan to get his panties in a twist. I swear, that motherfucker must have a serious case of blue balls. He hasn’t been able to fuck her out of his system because the girl won’t go anywhere near him, and sure, that’s partly my fault, but it’s not like any of us knew that Logan was going to fall for the broken, sad girl when she cried on his shoulder.
Hudson glances back at me. “Logan was right though, you’re not getting anywhere near that girl. This is different. Forget about it before she starts to fuck with your head. This is your senior year, and we have a championship to win,” he says, the afternoon sun smacking him right in the face and making his eyes sparkle a blinding emerald green. “I know you’ve already got colleges lining up for you, but the rest of us need this win.”
“Chill out, man,” I say, my gaze flicking toward Riley to see his stare still locked on mine. “She’s not fucking with my head. It’s just a little bit of fun to pass the time. Don’t stress, I’m all in for this season. We’re taking the championship no matter what.”
Riley stares back as he stretches his quads, knowing damn well the coach will have us running all session. “So, if she’s just some random chick,” he says, glancing up toward the parking lot, taking her in. “Then you wouldn’t mind if I take a shot, yeah? She’s fucking hot, and we all know those new friends of hers are warning her away from you.”
I clench my jaw, unsure why the idea of my best friend going after Killjoy doesn’t sit right with me. I know he has no real interest in her, but if she offers to get on her knees or spread her pretty thighs for him, he’s not going to say no. He’s simply asking to see my reaction, so I play the game, not ready to admit out loud that after only a short weekend, she’s already intrigued me more than any woman has before. Hell, I won’t even admit it to myself. “Like I told Jax, you can try all you like, but we both know that she’s not interested in anything you’ve got.”
