“Yes. He didn’t see me as a human. Just something to play with, show off, and to hurt when the mood struck.”

“I think that’s enough for now, Jones,” Stanford said.

Jones scowled but picked his files up and walked out.

“I am sorry,” Stanford said. “That the man’s a bastard, but he’s good at his job.”

“Is she in any danger?”

“I would say yes even though we have him in jail. He has a cousin in the mafia here.”

“Can I take her home now?”

“Yes. Thank you, Emily. I know that had to be difficult.”

She nodded. She just wanted to get home. The more time she sat there, the more she could feel herself unravel and shut down at the same time. Her head throbbed, and her stomach twisted, making her nauseous.

“Come on, baby.” Grey helped her up off her chair and wrapped an arm around her waist.

“I’ll be in touch,” Stanford said.

Grey shook his hand and then led her out of the room, down the hall, and to the elevator.

It was like she was seeing the world through a smoky glass, and the sounds of the place seemed to grow.

She relaxed a little when Grey’s men surrounded them, and then they were in the car. Grey had his arm around her. She leaned against his side and closed her eyes.

He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Let’s get you home.”

A sigh escaped but nothing else.

“I was so proud of you.”

She blinked a few times before lying against him.

The car pulled into the driveway and around the circle, then stopped at the front door. Saul was there to open the door, and Grey helped her out.

“Thank you, Saul,” Grey said.

“You’re welcome, sir. I hope Emily feels better.”

She vaguely heard him and then got confused. Was she ill? Nothing was making sense to her at the moment. Her instinct was to run and hide, but Grey kept her plastered to his side.

Once the door closed, she felt a certain relief, but it didn’t help her overall mental situation right then.

“How about a bath?”

Emily nodded, but she couldn’t understand everything. It still felt like she was floating in molasses.

He walked her up the stairs, through the master bedroom, and into the master bath. She stood docile while he stripped her of her clothes and started the water in the tub. He pulled her hair back and into a messy bun before he helped her into the bathtub.

“Tell me if it’s too hot.”

She closed her eyes and rested her head back against the tub. Her emotions were so frantic she couldn’t pinpoint just one, so she didn’t want to answer any questions he might have.

“I’ll be in the bedroom. I’ve got a call to make. Call out if you need me.”

She heard his footsteps fade away, and she was finally alone, so all she had to concentrate on was her breathing and her heartbeat. There was nothing else she wanted to deal with at the moment.
