“So?” Susan said.
“I wondered what had happened to put her in that frame of mind when you were supposed to be helping her.”
“I tried to—”
“By asking her about being raped? I’m not a counselor, but I don’t have to guess that’s not the way you get a person to open up to you.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. She’s a little liar.”
“Well, I’d believe this woman over you any day. But I also had a camera hidden because I wanted to make sure what was happening.”
Susan gasped. “You can’t do that. It’s illegal.”
“Not exactly. This is my house, and I can do what I want. If I had you arrested, it wouldn’t be admissible in court, buttaking it to your supervisors is all I need. I will have your license taken away before I’m done with you.”
Susan turned red. “You can’t, you bastard. It’s your word against mine. I’m well respected in my field.”
Grey snorted. “Even if it were between you and me, I’d still win. You see, I was curious about your other patients, so I got a list of them.”
“You can’t do that. I’ll have you arrested,” she shouted.
Grey kissed Emily’s knuckles and grinned. “The ones I talked to had a lot of interesting things to say. The things you said to these people sometimes scarred them as much as the incident that got you involved. I really wish I could have you arrested. You deserve it. But I’ll have to be content just ruining your name. You’ll never be able to practice again anywhere in the United States.”
He had to bite back his grin when Susan turned colors and vibrated where she stood. “You perverted son of a bitch. You’ll pay for this.”
“Monty, do you want to come out?” Grey asked. He thought the woman would faint when she got a look at the man in charge of the mental health department. “I invited my friend to sit here with me and watch you.”
“I found it very informative, Miss Thomas. Mr. Warner is right. You’re ruined in this field. Both of us will see to it. I’m just embarrassed that no one caught this sooner. Don’t bother coming back to the office. I’ll have your office cleared out and the boxes delivered to your home.”
Grey finally saw she understood how dire her situation was when she turned and walked out.
Monty turned to Emily. “Dear, I want to extend my apologies. You should have never had to deal with that, especially after what you went through, and I’m deeply sorry.”
Grey watched her face and smiled when tears filled her eyes.
“It’s okay, sir. It wasn’t your fault.”
“Oh, I take full responsibility, dear. I never knew she was such a bigot. I have my own little at home, and Susan knows it and has been to our house for holiday parties. My wife is going to get a kick out of this. She never liked the woman.”
“My Emily didn’t either. I think they’re more sensitive to other people than we are,” Grey said.
“I wouldn’t doubt that. Now, I’m going to get out of your hair.”
He stopped at the door. “I have to tell you how proud I was when you stood up to her. You’re a very strong woman. Don’t ever forget that.”
Emily sniffed. “Thank you, sir.”
