“How long do I have to be here?” Larkin asked the nurse in the chair.
The woman came to stand at the end of her bed. “Another twenty-four hours to make sure you’re mentally stable enough to be out.”
“I am. I was delirious with pain.”
“They’re taking that into account. Do you want to harm yourself anymore?” the nurse asked.
“No.”
“You kept telling them to let you die,” the nurse said.
Brylee gasped, pressed her hands to her mouth, and started crying. “Don’t ever say that again.”
Larkin reached out for her hand. “I won’t.”
The nurse started tucking the blanket around her and checking her IV. “Miss, you need to leave and let her sleep. You can come back in the morning.”
Brylee kissed her cheek. “I’ll be here tomorrow as soon as they let me.”
“Okay. Thank you for coming.”
Brylee snorted. “That’s insulting. Of course, I would come.”
“I love you,” Larkin said and waved.
Brylee blew her a kiss from the doorway. “I love you, too.”
