Chapter Four

She felt like she was floating, like there were a million voices around her.

“Miss, can you tell us what’s wrong?”

She squinted her eyes open to see a doctor. “My stomach. So much pain.”

The doctor barked something, and then a few people scurried around. They put in an IV and then immediately started moving her down the hall. It seemed like they were running, but she knew they couldn’t do that because it wasn’t safe unless it was an emergency.

The thought that they might be rushing because something was seriously wrong with her crossed her mind.

“What’s your name?”

“Larkin.”

“Who can we call for you, honey?”

“Brylee. She’s number two on my phone that’s in my pocket. No one else, please. I don’t want anyone else.” She started crying hysterically. “I think you should let me die. I’m never going to be the same.” She turned on her side and sobbed. The pain in her heart was as severe as the one in her stomach.

“Someone get her sedated and put this on her chart until we can figure out what’s going on. Her emotional state is as bad as her physical. No one gets to see her besides Brylee.”

“Yes, sir.”

The pain receded a bit, and she started to feel like she was floating.

“Larkin. I’m going to put this over your face. I want you to take deep breaths for me.”

“Will it kill me?” she asked.

“No, not at all.”

“I want it to.”

Someone gasped as her eyes closed, and she slowly glided away.

She said a silent goodbye to her friends.

It felt like she just closed her eyes when someone tried to wake her up.

She looked around and knew she wasn’t in heaven. “Oh, no. You were supposed to let me go,” she cried out.

“No, honey. Whatever feels like the end of the world will get better.”

Tears started to run down her face. “You don’t understand. My world is destroyed. I’ve got nothing left.”

The nurse wiped her tears and patted her arm. “I’m so sorry. I hope with time, it will get better.”

She fell back to sleep but woke up when they transferred her to another bed.

Another nurse started adjusting things and tucking the blanket around her. “Are you warm enough, hun?”

She shook her head. She would never feel warm again, no matter how many blankets they put on her.

The nurse squeezed her shoulder after laying another blanket over her. “Sleep, sweetie.”

The next time she opened her eyes, Brylee sat next to her bed. Brylee instantly stood and grabbed her hand. “What happened?”

Larkin blinked a few times. “I’m not sure. I had horrible pain.”
