Warrick saw everyone smile at her embarrassment.
“I heard the two bad men whispering in Russian and heard they were going to try something. I didn’t catch what, but I knew it was bad.”
“You could understand them?” Mr. Donelly asked.
She looked up at Warrick, and he nodded. “Go ahead.”
“Yes, I understand Russian.”
“Where did you learn that?” Mr. Donelly asked.
“I like to listen to tapes and stuff. I like the different sounds and ways to say something simple as hello.”
“You know more than one?”
She nodded.
Mr. Donelly said something in Russian. Warrick knew what he said, and he knew Shelby did when she laughed.
“You have a horrible accent.” She went on to answer him in Russian with a perfect accent.
Warrick loved to see the surprise in man’s eyes.
“I know several,” she said and then asked Mr. Donelly a question in Spanish and French.
“How many do you know, dear?”
“I think eight.”
Warrick heard a few of the guys cough as they looked at her in surprise.
“Do you think you could learn more?” Mr. Donelly asked.
Warrick shook his head. “Absolutely not.” At the same time, Shelby said, “Yes.”
She looked up at him, and he slowly shook his head.
Shelby turned back to the man. “No, sir, I cannot.”
“Donelly, I know what you’re trying to do, and it’s not going to happen. You’re not using my girl for your official business.”
“But she’d be such an asset to us.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Fine. I might ask again.”
“You can ask all you want, but it will be the same answer,” Warrick said.
Donelly cleared his throat. “I called my people. They’re coming now to get the men.”
“Good.”
“Before I go, do you know if they learned anything from the girls’ work?”
Shelby started laughing. “The only thing they learned was to download episodes of theKardashians.”
“What’s that?” Mr. Donelly asked.
