She was frustrated and excited at the same time. God, what was she going to do with him? She needed to keep him at arm’s length, but it was hard not to do what she secretly wanted. Every fiber in her body came alive when she was with him. She had to keep strong at the same time she had to cautiously keep her heart safe from him.
That was easier said than done. The man was determined. How long did she think she could hold out against his persuasive personality? She stood and gathered her things. She needed to go home, take medication, eat, and sleep. All in that order.
Ava was locking the library door when a chill ran up her spine. Freezing, she turned and scanned the cars parked on the curb for what was sending alarm bells off in her body.
At that time of day, the streetlights cast too many shadows, making it harder to catch sight of anything. Shaking, she walked to her car, keeping her keys handy to use to defend herself if needed and looking around for the threat.
She unlocked the door, sank into her car, and hurriedly locked it. Ava’s hands gripped the steering wheel as she looked around. Tension radiated through her body. Most people would think she was being silly, but she knew to trust her sixth sense. It had already saved her life once before.
Not finding or seeing anything suspicious, she turned the key and drove home, keeping an eye on her rearview mirror for someone following her. After closing the garage door, she dragged herself into her house, locking it behind her and resetting the alarm. She desperately needed her medicine but couldn’t, not yet. She walked gingerly through the house, making sure every door and window was locked and secure.
Her headache was now at a level that she knew the medicine wouldn’t take all the pain away, but it would keep it at a level she could deal with. After downing the pills and a glass of water, she slowly made her way to her bedroom. Turning on her alarm, she sank onto her bed, fully dressed, unable to do anything but curl into a ball and wish for sleep to take her.
