Chapter Thirteen
Amber slept the rest of the day and through the night. When she woke up, she felt much better. The doctor and Cesar were talking to each other while the nurse checked her vitals.
“How are you feeling, young lady?” the doctor asked.
“I feel good.”
“That’s great. I’ll have the nurse take out the IV and then get you checked out of here. How does that sound?”
“Good, sir.”
“All right. Would you like something to eat while you wait?”
She glanced at Cesar when he cleared his throat.
“I’ll get her something to eat when we get home.”
The doctor chuckled. “I don’t blame you. The food here is okay but nothing like a home-cooked meal.”
Cesar nodded.
“I’ll have the nurse bring in some scrubs for you to wear home.”
“Thank you.” That sounded way better than walking out in the nightgown they had her in.
“Take care, young lady.”
“I will. Thank you.”
The doctor and nurse walked out.
She glanced at Cesar to find him staring at her. “Are you sure you want to take me home with you?”
He wrapped one of his hands around her wrist. “I’m positive. Now stop thinking so much, and let me take care of you.”
“I … okay.”
The nurse walked back in and laid some clothing on the end of the bed.
“Do you need help dressing?” the nurse asked her.
“No, I’ll take care of it if you’d like to start on her discharge papers,” he said.
“I can do that. I’ll be right back.”
Amber turned her gaze to Cesar when he pulled the blanket to the bottom of the bed.
He grasped her shoulders and carefully lifted her into a sitting position. “Tell me if I hurt you, pequeña.”
She nodded, then gasped when he started to unsnap the top of the gown she wore. “Wait.” She clutched at the fabric to hold it together. “I can do this.”
He set his hands on her knees. “I know, but it will be easier for me to help.”
“But, you’ll see me.”
“Chica, I already have. I bathed you after they got you into the room.”
“You mean … you saw everything?”
