When the doors slid open, and Trey was standing inside with his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl on his face, she knew she’d been caught.
“Do you mind telling me why you left Rylan’s house without telling them, and why you’re not answering your phone? Jenna is worried sick.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I just don’t feel good, and I didn’t want to ruin their fun.” Now she felt bad when he looked concerned, walked to her, and placed his hand on her forehead.
“I don’t have a fever. Just a headache.”
“Next time, tell one of the daddies, honey, and then they’ll bring you home.”
She nodded even though she wanted to yell that she didn’t have a daddy or a home, so what exactly was she supposed to do? Use her friends’ daddies and homes? God, the last thing she wanted was to be needy or pathetic. She knew she was strong, and she could take care of herself. It wasn’t easy for a woman like her who craved affection and authority, but she could live without it.
“Go on in and lie down. I’ll check on you in a little bit.”
“Okay.”
Once in her room, she showered and pulled on sweats and a t-shirt before sliding into bed. It was only one in the afternoon, but she just needed to be somewhere where she didn’t have to think about anything, and sleep was her only option.
A few hours later, she woke up to find Jenna on the bed with her.
“Hey, do you still feel sick?”
She shook her head and pulled herself up to lean against the headboard. “I’m better.”
“Does this have anything to do with Duncan?”
She shrugged because she never could hide anything from Jenna. “He looked at me like he detested me, and I don’t know why. I mean, it’s okay if he’s not attracted to me, but to dislike me like that … I just don’t understand.”
“I talked to Faith, and she doesn’t understand it either.”
“It doesn’t matter. I just hope I don’t have to see him again.”
“I hope so, too. Bigfoot wants you to come to eat dinner.”
Kyla snorted. “I wish you’d stop calling Trey that. He’s nice.” Jenna was a little hellion and wasn’t afraid of anything, even a six-and-a-half-foot man. Kyla wished she could be more like her.
“Maybe to you.”
Kyla rolled her eyes. “He treats me like a little sister, but he looks at you like a woman he wants to devour.”
Kyla chuckled at the blush that covered her friend’s face. “And I know you like him, too. So, why are you fighting it so much?”
“I’m just not sure I can handle a guy like him in that kind of way.”
“He’s exactly what you need, girl. If he were less dominant, you’d roll right over him.”
Jenna shrugged.
Kyla could see the smile Jenna tried to hide and wished the two of them would work it out because she thought they’d be good together.
“I need to use the bathroom, and then I’ll be in.”
Jenna jumped off the bed. “Okay, hurry. I’m hungry.”
Kyla relaxed and laughed as Jenna and Trey bickered back and forth during the meal. Although she was happy for them, she had to admit she was envious, too. She just kept telling herself she’d find a place where she belonged. It might take time, but there was a place for her, or she’d make one.
Trey set down his fork and glanced at her. “Kyla, can you come down to the office tomorrow? I’d like you and Jenna to help decorate the conference room like you did my office.”
“Sure. I’d love to. But I have to ask when I can get a job.”
