Chapter Six
The next night, Trey wore dark jeans, a black t-shirt, and black boots so he was able to blend into the shadows across the street. He watched the driver-bodyguard the men sent with the girls stand off to the side and observe Larkin, Nia, Aleena, and Brylee go through the line to get movie tickets. He could see them sneak peeks at them as they stood off in the shadows across the street.
Travis snorted as he stood beside him. “They would make horrible spies.”
Trey chuckled.
“Do you have a description of the guy?” Travis asked him.
Trey grinned. “Yeah, Darian got it from Larkin, who got it from Nia, who got it from Kyla.”
Travis snickered.
The two men stood talking as they waited for the girls to come out of the movie theatre. The plan was that Travis would take the girls away, and he would stay back and watch over Jenna and Kyla as they walked home. Kyla said that was the time the guy bugged Jenna the most.
Trey waited for another thirty minutes after Travis left with the girls. He tensed and looked around when the two walked out of the darkened theatre and turned right. Trey stayed in the shadows on the other side of the street as he followed them. He was told they lived four blocks from the theatre, but he didn’t think anyone knew how dark and deserted the streets were at that time of night.
It was the perfect storm if a person wanted to cause them harm.
They made it to their apartment over the laundromat, unlocked the door, and let themselves in. Trey stayed and watched their lights come on and the girls moving around. After an hour, the lights turned off and the girls went to bed, and he didn’t see anything. He turned and walked back to his car.
He’d try the next night again.
He’d only been asleep a couple of hours when his phone rang.
“Black.”
“Hey, Trey, it’s Darian. I just got a call from the hospital that Jenna was attacked.”
“Fuck. How’d that little prick get in? I didn’t leave until the girls were locked in and asleep.”
“We’ll find out,” Darian said. “I’ll meet you guys at the hospital.”
He jerked out of bed and pulled on whatever clothes he could find before heading toward Travis’s bedroom. He knocked and waited.
Travis opened the door. “What’s up?”
“Jenna’s in the hospital. I’m heading there now.”
“We’ll go with you.”
Trey waited impatiently until Travis and Nia raced out of the house and jumped into the car he had idling.
“Turn right out the driveway. There’s a shortcut I know of,” Travis told him.
Trey glanced in the mirror to see how Nia was doing and saw the tears that ran down her face.
“Hey, sweetheart, she’s going to be fine,” Trey told her as he turned his attention back on the street because he was driving a little fast.
Fortunately, the streets were pretty deserted at three in the morning.
They parked the car and raced into the Emergency Room door.
“Can I help you?”
“We’re here to see Jenna Stuart,” Travis told the lady.
“Take a seat, and I’ll call to see if you’re allowed back yet.”
