Chapter 12
Dani watched as the techs tried to decrypt the microchip and she rubbed her head to stop the pain from taking over.
“Drink,” Luke said handing her a cup of tea he’d laced with her pain medication. “Baby you need to get something in you, DJ and GG need you.”
Dani sighed and gave in. It felt good; the warmth of it chased away the coldness that was inside her and her head stopped hurting. She glanced over at him and saw the answer on his face. “You put something in it, didn’t you?”
“You wouldn’t take the pain medication when I asked so I decided it’d be better to simply not give you the option. Dani don’t argue, just let it work.”
She wanted to be mad at him the way she was with Dean, but she couldn’t be, and it hurt more because she knew it was just for show. He wouldn’t reveal the whole truth to an entire room of strangers. That wasn’t Luke’s way. The only thing she didn’t have to worry about was pretending to be happy; she could dissolve into tears, and no one would question her right now.
Dani let the techs work for another hour before she couldn’t stand it anymore. She got up from her spot ignoring Luke’s worried look and moved over to the row of computers. “Move…”
“Mrs. Nolan, please let us do our job,” Agent Ross said.
“You’re never going to crack this, so have them move out of my way please.”
“These are the best computer technicians in the state, the bureau, we’ll get it,” Agent Ross replied.
“No, they’re not because if they were, they’d know that the algorithm they’re using is too new for when this chip was last used. It’s been inside a watch for six years which means it hasn’t been updated since then.”
“And that’s why we’re using a code that will pull from that timeframe’s encryption abilities,” the tech beside her stated.
“Really, that’s why we’ve been here for eight hours, and you’ve got nothing? Just move,” Dani said pulling the keyboard towards her. She stopped their process and checked the program files they were using.
“How did you do that,” the tech asked as she slipped through the program and began to pull up her hidden backdoor sector of it.
She ignored the question as she put in her identification and the program opened up the entire system for her use.
“What is this?” one of the girls said staring up at the wall where the information was displayed. “This isn’t the same program.”
“Holy shit,” one of the youngest guys in the room said staring between it and her. “No freaking way.”
“Zack, something you’d like to share?” Agent Ross asked.
“You have no idea who she is, do you?” Zack asked the others. “I’ve seen this backdoor once, our professor at MIT told us about it showing us the screen shot, there’s only one person who could get into it though.”
“Who’s that?” the girl asked.
“The program designer; this is the program that all hackers attempt to crack and she’s not just Danielle Nolan, she’s the genius behind this whole thing. You’re a legend at MIT,” Zack said in disbelief.
“MIT?” Agent Ross inquired. “That’s not listed on your background.”
“Neither is having a twin brother because it’s not my background,” Dani admitted as she set up the new algorithm to run on the chip. It started shooting out information almost immediately and the room grew quiet before the others started opening the files that came up.
Dani took the biggest file and started on the decryption as the others tried on their ends. She managed to get into it and the list of accounts told her why Felix had been so eager to get the chip back. It was a list of every single account worldwide that he had money in as well as the passwords for the accounts and where the money came from. It was everything the feds needed to take him down and everything she needed to get her girls back.
“Good lord,” Agent Ross said as she quickly checked on the accounts in question. “He’s been shut out of the accounts for six years?”
“Yup and that’s not it,” Dani replied as she pulled up another file. This one showed his payments to hit men with indications as to who they were to kill.
“Ready to get your girls back?” Agent Ross asked them as the head of the local office came in to look over the information.
“You’re giving this back to him?” he questioned. “No, everyone’s been after this guy; we are not just handing this back.”
“Like hell you’re not,” Dani said as her anger raged. “I can with a single command crash the entire system I created and then you’ll be scrambling to find something half as good to replace it. You want the information, then get another chip and copy it down because this one’s going back to him untouched. I will not let anyone hurt my girls.”
“You’re threatening a government agency Mrs. Nolan.”
