“Yeah,” she nodded. “Give me a few minutes?”
“I’ll be right outside,” he said pressing a kiss onto her lips as part of him hoped it said yes and another part prayed for a no. He’d just gotten her, all of her, and he didn’t know if he wanted to share that with anyone. Then again, it’d keep them connected no matter what happened.
Dani walked out of the bathroom carrying the test and set it down on the dresser to finish as she hugged him tightly. The idea of having his baby was taking hold of her and she wanted it, wanted a piece of him that she’d never lose but right now wasn’t the best time for it to happen.
“What’d it say?” Luke asked.
“It said to wait two minutes then check the results. I knew if I stayed in there, I’d look early but it should be time now,” she answered moving towards the test as her watch beeped at her. She took a deep breath lifting it and saw the results clearly. There was no iffy dull line, they were bold as can be and she pressed her hand over her stomach in shock.
“Dani…” he said trying to figure out her reaction.
“I think we should definitely schedule that appointment,” she said showing him.
“Dani baby, please don’t cry,” he stated as a tear slipped from her eye. “It’ll be okay; we’ll make it work.”
“I’m not crying because I’m upset Luke; it might not be the perfect time but we’re in a much better spot than the first time. I just don’t want to take any chances.”
“So, no pill tonight?” he asked knowing she was sure that’s what had caused the issues last time.
“Nope, not until we know for sure.”
“Does that mean no us?”
“That means shut up and kiss me Luke because if you don’t, I’m going to agonize over this until we finally see the doctor and…” She got no further as Luke pulled her into his arms and showed her the best way to keep her mind from thinking.
It was too bad he couldn’t do the same thing as they waited in the office late the next afternoon for the blood test results. She felt like pacing back and forth until she was exhausted but that wouldn’t help, the only thing that would was answers.
“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Miranda said coming in. “It’s been a crazy morning.”
“It’s fine,” Luke stated holding her hand.
“I don’t mean to sound rude but…”
“The blood work came back,” Miranda told them, “and you are pregnant. From what you’ve said, it’s extremely early but I know you’re anxious after what happened last time. All pregnancy hormone levels look good and there is nothing to indicate that you’re likely to miscarry again. You’re young, healthy and from the looks of it, happy but worried.”
“Yeah, so we just go home and go about our normal routines?” Dani asked as Luke kissed her fingers.
“I’m going to put you on a prenatal vitamin because your iron levels were a tad low. No more birth control pills, and if you start having morning sickness that affects your current weight, I want you in immediately. You’re on the low side as it is. Normally we recommend gaining a total of around twenty-five to thirty pounds, but I’d really like to see you up that to closer to forty,” Miranda cautioned. “Whatever you do…don’t lose any more.”
“She won’t, I’ll make sure of it. Anything else? Precautions we should take, things we should avoid?” Luke added lifting an eyebrow.
“As I said there’s no reason to believe anything will happen, you know much sooner than most parents do. No drinking is certainly on the list, and I’d avoid roller coasters or bungee jumping but all marital aspects are fine. You’ll probably start feeling the effects soon and that might deter your physical relationship a bit but there’s no reason to stop. If you do experience any pain that stays or doesn’t fade let me know and we’ll see what’s going on. I’ll schedule an appointment for you in about a month.”
It was a long but yet short month for them, the morning sickness had started up, but Dani fought through it making sure to keep her weight from dropping any further. Having the proof in front of her made her determined to stay strong and her therapist was supporting her entirely. The first appointment slipped past them and soon they were onto the next.
“That’s our baby?” Luke asked as they listened to the heartbeat.
“Yes,” Miranda stated, and Dani knew something was off.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing Dani, relax,” Miranda cautioned feeling her pulse increase. “It’s nothing to be worried about. I’m going to schedule you for an ultrasound. We haven’t done one yet so it’s just routine.”
They let Dani get dressed and Luke stopped the doctor outside the exam room. “Is there something wrong?”
“No, I don’t want to say anything to Dani, but I heard a muffled echo in the background; it’s possible that you’re having twins.”
“But it’s also possible that something might be wrong?” he questioned.
