Putting his hands up, he backs off. “Hey, it’s your favorite movie, not mine. Those little rock trolls are sweet, though, and they have a point.”

I glare at him for a minute.

“Look, it’s clear there are a ton of unresolved feelings between you two and I don’t plan to get in between them, by blurring lines and muddying the waters with he said, she said crap.”

I nod, understanding his wishes. Hell, I want that too, but my warm heart wants to suffocate her cold one until it thaws and she sees me. I’m too into her not to care. “Let’s not talk about it. Now you know and we can move on.”

His eye quirks. “One more question… how are you going to go into the office and work with her.”

I shrug. “I’m not. I’ll take some time off. I’ve got multiple vacation days stocked up for a rainy day. Besides, I’ve already written my story for this month’s column, just need to email it off to her. Easy. Done.”

“Okay, but what happens when you go back?”

“Who knows? Maybe I’ll quit. It’s not like I need the money.”

“Dude, you’re giving up? You’re not even going to fight for her? You’re just accepting that she doesn’t want you? I don’t even know what to say to you right now. Apparently, she’s not the only one with flaws.” He mumbles things like an idiot and fixer upper under his breath.

“She doesn’t want me. What is there to say?” Words part through gritted teeth.

“Why don’t you roll over and play dead while you’re at it? Accepting defeat already? This is not the cocky asshole I call my best friend, this guy is a coward.” He shakes his head, picking up the remote and starts up the movie again.

Our conversation ends, but his words repeat in my mind. Is that what I’m doing? Being a coward? She said she didn’t want this…
