“Yeah,” Enzo says, smiling at the group.

“Look,” David says, “we’re not here to cause trouble, but we heard about the problems at the ranch and thought we would come to see about survivors once the weather died down.”

I freeze and my lips go numb as I search his gaze. “What about the ranch?” I ask.

“We had a couple of survivors who found their way to us. Damn shame,” he says, shaking his head. “We want to extend the invite to you to come. To stay. It’s safe. We have a large community. We have rules and safeguards.”

I want so badly to ask who he’s speaking of but hold my tongue for a better time. Right now, I have to focus because even if it is someone from the ranch, there’s no way that Cole, or Mich and Jase, would’ve gone there without finding me first.

Enzo and I eye each other, unsure of what we should do. We are relatively safe at Sam’s Club, and we have food and water, but the safety part could change at any moment. We need other people to survive, even if some of them turn out to be shitty human beings.

David nods when we step away and we huddle together to debate our options, but in the end, we know there is only one. We need people, and we both know it. All the food in the world won’t save our asses in a fight—or our sanity during another entire winter of just the two of us.
