Taylor took her hand gently and looked into her eyes. “Yes, I’m sure.”

In the back of her mind, she heard Sara’s voice re-telling her to think with her lady parts, as said parts started to tingle from Taylor’s touch. “Okay then.”

“Great, I’ll call you tomorrow. Pizza, on me. Make a reservation for us here in the hall, will ya?” He planted a quick kiss on her forehead as he crouched to the back door. Stopping in the archway to the living room where the dogs lay snoozing, he said, “Rest up, boys. We’re playing fetch tomorrow.” And he was gone into the darkness of the night while Colbert did his opening monologue.

She’d just settled onto the couch when the house phone rang. It rang a dozen times, but she refused to answer. Then her cell phone started blaring Sara’s ring tone. Rolling her eyes, she said, “Should have known.”

“Hello?”

“Yee-haw, girlfriend! That’s some photo!” Sara giggled. “You have to tell me everything.”

“Yeah, I saw it. The only thing to say is nothing happened.” She was not about to tell her about the lecture from Taylor’s publicity manager.

“What? After all the behavior?”

Roberta told her the short version of the story then excerpts of the Laurel Lynn visitation.

“You’ve got to be kidding me? She wants you and Taylor to stay away from each other like you’re two misbehaving children?”

“Yeah. Don’t worry. Taylor and I have figured out a secret meeting place.” Roberta smiled, thinking of how mundane the truth would be if told.

“Really? Wow, so you two are moving along.”

“What? No, we’re just friends. We enjoy each other’s company.”

“Uh-huh. Sure, if that’s what you want to call it—”

“No, I’m serious ...” Roberta butted in, shaking her head. She didn’t know what it was and wasn’t ready to dissect it with Sara, regardless of how well-meaning her interest.

“Okay. Whatever.”

Hanging up the phone, Roberta thought about Taylor’s expression in the photograph. What had he really been thinking?
