“Your prescription, darling. It’s time for you to take your pill.” He started toward her.

Queenie began barking ferociously.

His mouth twisted in a sneer. “You and that little dog of yours are going to have a little accident. I can’t wait to get rid of you both.” He stepped toward her. If you don’t take your pills, she’s going to take a long dip in the pool.

Gillian wavered, horror filling her. She didn’t doubt for a second he wouldn’t follow through on his threat. She stepped backward, bumping into the stove, the knife held tightly in front of her.

Queenie was still barking. She prayed she’d stop. She couldn’t bear to see Paul hurt her.

“Cute pup,” Nick said, walking in from the backyard.

Gillian gasped. Could it be true? “Nick!”

“How’d you get in here?” Paul demanded, stepping toward him.

“Walls weren’t that high.” Nick grinned, then pulled back and punched Paul hard in the face, sending him reeling to the floor.

Gillian dropped the knife and threw herself into Nick’s arms. “You came.”

“Of course, I came.”

Tears filled her eyes. She’d never been so happy to see anyone in her life.

“Come on, let’s go get Agent Morris.” With his arm around her waist, he led her toward the front door.

She looked over her shoulder and saw Paul running out the sliding glass door out back. “He’s getting away.”

“Don’t worry, they’ll find him,” Nick said. “All that matters is I got you.”

She smiled up at him, absolutely sure that she’d never been happier. “Yes, you do.”
