“How can you say that?” Gillian spoke up. “Nick is a wonderful father. You have no right to try and keep his daughter from him.”

“There’s no proof, young lady, that this man is her father,” he said.

“I’ve had a paternity test. The results will be in soon.”

“That won’t make any difference to us,” Mrs. Reaves added.

“You will never get your hands on our granddaughter. Do you understand? We know all about you, Mr. Carr. We know how hard it is for you to maintain a decent job. We know your criminal record. We know how you jump from one woman to another. Our granddaughter needs stability and security in her life. What have you ever done that can prove you will be able to offer her that?” Mr. Reaves said, his face flushed.

Nick’s mouth dropped open.

“Nick loves his daughter. He will be able to offer all the security and stability his baby needs,” Gillian said, her back stiff.

“That’s all true,” Nick said. “But more than that, I’ll be able to offer her a father’s love. You or anyone else won’t be able to do that because you’re not her father. I am.”

Mr. Reaves shook his head. “It takes a lot more than a roll in the hay to make you a father. When you’ve figured that out, maybe we’ll talk.”

“You can’t keep my daughter from me.”

“Watch me.”

Stunned, Gillian watched the couple walk away. This was much worse than she’d imagined. Criminal record? Nick had a heck of a fight coming his way. She reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze. “I’m here for you.”

“Are you sure? It’s going to get ugly.”

Was she? The hope on his face was all she needed to see. “Absolutely. I won’t let you lose your baby.”
