He’s been leaning on his car all night. He’s parked where I can see him clearly no matter where I am on the track. It’s been the same every night. His eyes follow me everywhere I go. I’ve tried to ignore him and do my job but when others start noticing it’s a problem.
He watches me as I walk up to him until I’m standing a foot from his face. “You’re attracting unwanted attention,” I say.
He shrugs, “Doesn’t bother me.”
“Well it bothers me. I don’t need rumors about my new friend popping up at the track getting back to my boss,” I growl.
He tilts his head.
I sigh, “Last race is at midnight. I’ll get out of here by one.” I’m going to regret what I say next. “Come back then and we can get this over with.”
He watches me for a moment, mulling it over. “All right.”
He stands straighter, moving in just enough that I can feel his warm breath on my face. I hold my breath as he smirks. He leans in, bringing his lips to my ear. I hold back a shiver as his words tickle my cheek. “I’ll come back. But I’m not leaving until we finish what we started five years ago.”
I swallow hard and he backs away, heading to the driver side of his car. Before dropping into his seat, he looks back at me. “And I plan on finishing it.”
Shit.
I put my head down and run the track. I don’t watch the time as it ticks by. I try to forget that he’ll be back. Or the words he said.“Finish what we started.”
Five years ago, I was a foolish girl that didn’t know what I wanted. I’m not her anymore, and I really don’t need a distraction—or a reason to fall back into the life I never wanted.
“The field is clear,” Roger tells me as I finish watering down the track.
“All right. Thanks Roger, you can get out of here,” I tell him as I shut off the water valve. “Just make sure it’s grated in the morning.”
“You got it, Shady,” he says before he turns to walk away. He pauses for a moment and looksing back.
“Forgot something?” I ask.
“That guy you were talking to earlier is back,” he says warily. “You want me to stay?”
I look up to the Mercedes parked right at the front of the track. Niko is leaning on his hood watching me. “Nah, it’s fine. You can go.”
“You sure?” he asks.
“Yeah, I’m good. I can handle him.” I stare at my past with unease settling in my stomach.
“All right, but call me if you need me.” He walks off to his car, leaving just me and Niko staring at each other from across the track.
I take a deep breath before I traverse the track to meet him.
“You ready?” I ask. He nods his head. “Good. You’re my ride home.” I cross over to the passenger side and drop myself onto the luxury leather seats.
His smirk is visible as he settles into the driver seat. “Where to?” he asks.
I glance at him with my brow raised, “You’ve been following me. You tell me.”
He smirks, “All right.”
