“Rory,” he called out.

She came into the room and took a seat beside him on the sofa.

“Are you trying to get up?”

“I need to use the bathroom and get another pill.”

“Let me help you.” She got to her feet, leaned down, and put her arm around his waist to help him.

“Son of a bitch,” he swore at the pain.

“I’m so sorry he shot you.”

“I’ll be fine. It’s just sore right now.”

“I know. The pills will help.”

“I can get it.”

“I’ll get the pill bottle while you go to the bathroom. Use the one in the bedroom so you can lie down on the bed. Rest, Wilder.”

“I will.” He grinned. “You could probably use a nap.”

Rory laughed. “Not yet. We have too much to do. The guys asked about you. I’m sure they’ll want to see you in a couple of days.”

“I’d like to see them too. I’m just glad they weren’t in on it.”

“Me too. Now, go to the bathroom then get in bed. I’ll be right there.”

He touched her hair. “All right, baby.”

She stood on her toes and kissed his lips.

“You have no idea how scared I was when I heard you were shot.”

Wilder pulled her close to him and wrapped his good arm around her.

“I’m sorry.” He kissed the top of her head.

“It wasn’t your fault you were shot. I could shoot Buster myself.”

“He’s going away for a long time.”

“I’m glad. I’m just hurt that he did this.”

“Reece said he told them he got in trouble borrowing money that he couldn’t pay back. There are some people out there that no one should borrow money from.”

“He could have come to me.”

“Your in-laws approached him. He saw an opportunity and took it.”

“I don’t know how to feel about them.” She shook her head, and a tear rolled down her cheek. “I loved them. We were close. At least, I thought we were.”

He wiped the tear away with the pad of his thumb.

“I don’t know why they felt the need to do it. It was all legal. It’s not like you swooped in and stole it from them. Clay left it to you.”

“He hated this farm, but he knew I loved it. I guess that’s why he did it.”
