“He’s tough.”
“Not to mention hardheaded,” Rory said and smiled.
“Hell, that’s an understatement.” Reece grinned at her. Then he looked to the elevator doors when they slid open, and he got to his feet again.
Rory watched the man and woman walk to Reece. The woman hugged him, and the man shook his hand. Rory didn’t know who they were, but she got to her feet as they approached her.
“Rory, this is Nevada Shelton and his fiancée, Courtney Bennett. This is Rory Heston.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Rory. I’m just sorry it’s under these circumstances,” Courtney said as she shook her hand.
“Same here, Rory,” Nevada said.
“Thank you. It’s nice to meet you both.” She retook a seat beside Wilder’s mother and folded her hands in her lap. She watched as Nevada hugged Wilder’s parents and introduced them to Courtney.
Wilder’s parents seemed like wonderful people, and she could see how worried they were about their son. It shocked her when Rona told her that Wilder had spoken about her.
“I can’t imagine how you’re feeling, Rory. I didn’t know Nevada when he went through this, but I’m sure I would have been having trouble with it,” Courtney said as she took a seat beside her.
Now Rory knew why Nevada’s name was familiar. This was the man Wilder blamed himself for quitting the MDOL.
“Wilder told me about that,” Rory murmured.
“He needs to stop blaming himself for Nevada quitting. He’s so much happier now. He loves being a deputy, and he in no way, blames Wilder for his testimony. The man was under oath.”
“I told him the same thing, but he’s stubborn.”
“Yeah, I have a man like that.” Courtney smiled as she looked at Nevada.
Rory saw the enormous diamond on Courtney’s hand.
“Your ring is beautiful.”
“Thank you. I don’t think I could have picked a better one myself.”
“When’s the wedding?”
“Next month. I know Nevada invited Wilder, so maybe you could come with him.”
“I’d love to. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Oh, here comes a doctor,” Courtney said.
Rory looked at where the doctor stood and glanced around.
“Richards?”
It seemed like everyone in the waiting room nodded. Rory, and Wilder’s parents got to their feet. The doctor walked to them.
“He’s lost a lot of blood, but he’s going to be fine,” he said.
Rory plopped down onto the plastic chair as tears of relief rolled down her face. The Richards’ hugged.
“When can we see him?” Rona asked the doctor.
“Right now, but only two at a time in the room. He was just brought up from recovery, and he’s still out of it, but we need to monitor him, and we don’t need too many people in his room.”
“All right. We’re his parents,” Stephen said.
