“How do you know they don’t think cameras are there?”

“I heard one of them ask another if they checked for them. He said he did but didn’t see any. They know what they’re doing. Son of a bitch.”

“I’ve just lost more money,” she murmured.

“I’m sorry, and I hate to say this, but let’s put some cows in another pasture and see what happens. This way, it will confirm—” He stopped when he saw her shake her head.

“No.”

“Rory, I can’t catch them if they don’t steal the cows.”

She sat up, turned on the seat to face him, and he could practically feel the anger pouring from her.

“They’re not your cows, Wilder. I can’t risk losing more money. You’ve seen how the farm works. Each cow is important,” she snapped.

“Okay, so what do you suggest? Just quit putting the cows out? I’ll never solve the case like that.”

She sat back. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Rory, think about it. Eventually, they’re going to get suspicious about why you keep putting your cows in this pasture if that’s where they’re stolen from. We need to move them. Tell the men to take them to another pasture. That way, we’ll know if it’s one of your men. It has to be an accessible area, though.”

“That’s the only one with the road on Trent’s property.”

“I’d rather not have those thieves go onto his property any more than they already have.”

“Um, okay then. The west pasture is also close to the main road.”

“That will work. I’ll get the cameras tomorrow and set them up in the other pasture.”

“All right. I hate it, but I know it has to be done. I’ll show you where the other pasture is when we pass it on the way to the farm.”

Wilder nodded. Her damn scent was driving him insane. The woman was going to kill him, simple as that. He shook his head and glanced to the side window to hide a grin just thinking about her being in the woods, but he couldn’t stop the chuckle.

“Something funny?” she asked him.

He glanced at her and back to the road.

“You. Just what the hell did you think you would do back there?”

“Nothing. I just wanted to check on my cows, and I saw the truck and trailer.”

“Rory, you’re damn lucky they didn’t see you. They could have seriously hurt you,” he said.

“I wasn’t going to let them see me.”

“Is that right?Isaw you,” he pointed out.

“Because you were in the woods—”

“But you didn’t know if any of them were in there.” He shook his head. “Damn, woman, you can’t be doing that shit.”

“I won’t again.”

“Good.”

“I’m just glad you didn’t shoot me.”

“I don’t shoot without knowing what I’m shooting at.”
