“You’re so welcome.” She smiled radiantly, patting Josh’s arm where he was sitting beside her. “We can’t wait for your wedding. When’s the date? I can’t believe Parker hasn’t told us that yet.”
Before I could ask her what she was talking about, one of the other girls spoke up, gushing as she leaned over to see me past the woman who was sitting between us. “You two make such a cute couple.”
“I know, right?” Agatha said before glancing back at me. “I can’t wait to dance at your wedding. You two set our dance floor on fire last night. We’ll be sure to return the favor. I was so worried that no one would dance. You know how it goes sometimes. A couple can have the best music ever, but if there’s no one on the dance floor, no one feels comfortable going out there and the whole wedding falls flat.”
While she chattered on, the pieces started falling in place in my head.Oh my God. She thinks Parker and I are getting married. What the hell?
She’d been speaking loudly enough that she’d caught the attention of the whole table, and when I lifted my gaze to seek Parker’s out, I found him already looking at me. Expecting him to correct her, I waited and waited until it became clear that he wasn’t intending to say anything about her misconception.
When he got up a few minutes later, claiming that he needed to go to the bathroom, I jumped up and chased after him to confront him about it. I hadn’t corrected her straight away out of deference to the fact that these were his friends, but I’d be damned if I was going to let them believe we were engaged. That was just ridiculous.
Besides, he wouldn’t lie to his friends.Maybe he just didn’t want to call Agatha out in front of everybody.
That had to be it but I kept going because I needed to know for sure that his friends didn’t think we were actually going to get married. Why the hell would Parker want to marry me anyhow?
The answer was simple. He wouldn’t.
Now I just needed to make sure that I was right about that.
