“I don’t know. I heard him say something about some girl around here who had a crush on him. Maybe he’s worried about seeing her. He doesn’t want to lead her on.” When she saidlead her on,she did air quotes.
My mouth dropped open and I quickly shut it. “That’s whathesaid? That’s why you air-quoted it?”
“Yeah, that’s what I heard him say to Austin.”
“ToAustin?” My eyes were burning.
“What does this button do?” Paisley asked, pointing at the wall over the table.
I heard her question but my brain was frozen on what she’d just said. What I knew it meant. As if I didn’t feel stupid enough.
Paisley looked at me and her eyes suddenly went wide. “Wait…was Skyler talking aboutyou?”
