“Yeah, well, I had to check on my best friend.”

“Willow?” He tilted his head toward my phone.

“Excuse you.” I turned my phone facedown but then it buzzed again.Thank you for looking after me last night.

“What happened last night?” Ezra asked.

“Are you seriously reading my texts?”

“Yes, I’m standing right here.”

I shoved him. “Nothing. Willow”—I glanced toward the front of the RV, then lowered my voice—“got drunk.”

“Really? Why?”

“Probably because she was too nervous to talk to her soul mate.”

“Her soul mate?” he asked.

I flashed him the pic she sent.

“Who’s that?” he asked.

“I just told you.”

“And?”

“And what?” I asked.

“Did she talk to him?”

“I don’t know. We didn’t get that far. You interrupted, nosy.”

He took a bite of oatmeal, then picked up one of the other bowls and pointed toward Mom with it.

Back to Willow I texted:Did you talk to your soul mate, btw?

I don’t remember.

I’ll let Ezra know.

Why would you let Ezra know?

He’s being his typical nosy self. Speaking of soul mates, Skyler heard you call him my soul mate demon last night. I’m questioning whether or not to forgive you.

He heard me call him that?! I’m sorry!

You are not.

She sent a GIF of a girl laughing. I smiled but the thought of something else she’d said the night before turned my smile into a grimace. Are the answers to my interview questions really boring?

No, why?she answered a little too fast.

You said they were last night.

Don’t listen to drunk Willow. She obviously lies her face off.

Okay, I won’t listen to her.
