“I know you looked, but yes, you were allowed to.”

“I mean, it was wide open,” she said. “Was it for my project?”

“Yes, an elderberry plant from the hike this morning.”

“An elderberry plant? Are you a plant expert now? Mom would be so proud that her project is educating one of us.”

I put my chin on his shoulder. “I’m so happy other people get to see your art now.”

“Art is meant to be shared, right?”

“Your thirteen-year-old self was pretty smart,” I whispered.

This time I heard the footsteps on the ladder and then Austin’s head appeared. “What’s going on up here?” He was followed onto the roof by Ezra.

“Scoot down,” Austin said. Unlike the rest of us, he and Ezra didn’t crawl across the roof, they walked.

“I’m not moving,” Skyler answered. “There’s plenty of space.”

I laughed, I couldn’t help it. “I won’t let you fall.”

His eyes softened and he looked at me and said, “I won’t let you fall either.”
