Skyler nodded. “I know, that was my point.”

“It would be impossible to fall from up here,” I said.

“What if this whole thing tipped in some sort of catastrophic earth-moving event?”

“Yes, I hadn’t thought of that,” I said.

Paisley went to the glass and pressed her forehead against it. “I can see the whole city from here.”

“Pretty sure that’s the point,” Austin said, jumping down from the bench and patting her on the head.

“Where is your mom?” I asked Skyler. “You should get some pics with her. This view is amazing.”

“I don’t know where she is.” He tilted his head. “Why are you obsessed with my mom this weekend?”

“What?”

“You’ve been following her everywhere.”

“I have not.”

“You totally have,” Paisley said.

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen her much this trip. I’m trying to catch up.”

“Catch up?” Paisley asked. “She works, she reads, she watches television, she always talks about how exhausted she is. There you go, the summary of her life. You’re welcome, I just saved you a couple hours.”

“Where does she work now?”

“She’s a substitute teacher at our school,” Paisley said with a sigh. “Super fun.”

“I bet she loves seeing you guys around.” I pulled my phone out and took a picture of Skyler, whose head was now between his knees.

“You’re right. She does love that. She waves at me every time she sees me.”

“That’s cute.”

“Trust me, it’s not.”

“Hey, kids,” Ezra said, heading toward the doors. “We’re taking the elevator down one. There’s a glass floor that moves.”

“Not happening,” Skyler moaned.

“Did he just call us kids?” Paisley asked.

“I’ll get Skyler to safety,” I said. “You can go with the dads.”

“You’re really not going to come?” Ezra asked.

“Bye,” I said.

He shook his head and went inside.

Paisley looked at Skyler, then at me. Was she starting to suspect something? Much to my disappointment, I hadn’t touched Skyler since the bottom floor of Pike Place. But Paisley was smart. Finally, she shrugged and rushed after Ezra and Austin.

I petted Skyler’s hair. “You going to die?”

“I might.”
